Sydney graduates top of her class at East Grand
Rapids High School. She is interested in pursuing a career in
aeronautical or nuclear engineering and to study at either the
University of Michigan or Yale University.
Besides being an academic leader and having excellent test scores,
Sydney had very impressive letters of recommendation from her AP
instructors. Her Physics teacher wrote: “Sydney is a motivated and
accomplished student. She has all of the academic skills to do well in
any program she wishes to pursue. Not only are her problem solving
abilities first rate, but her work ethic allows her to apply her many
talents effectively. In addition, Sydney is a reliable athlete and
leads by example both on the field and off. I have rarely been able to
recommend a student as enthusiastically as I recommend Sydney”.
Sydney’s math instructor and Chairperson of the Mathematics Department
writes: “Sydney is one of the best students I have ever worked with.
She has consistently written outstanding scores throughout her math
courses. Sydney has completed all of the mathematics courses that the
College Board offers. She has one of the highest grade points in our
school and has taken the most challenging academic course we offer. Her
maturity and overall attitude additionally impress me. She sets high
expectations for herself and meets her own personal standards.”
To be a class leader one has to excel beyond academics and Sydney has
certainly met that challenge. Among her many outside activities she was
captain of both her varsity field hockey and softball teams, president
of the National Honors Society and was a member of We the
People-Constitutional Debate Team. She also participated in Habitat for
Humanity, Relay for Life, Bible Study Fellowship and volunteered at the
Southwest Community Center.
The Roger B. Chaffee Scholarship Fund is extremely proud to have Sydney as its 42nd Scholar.
